Imitation is the best form of flattery! This is the phrase that best describes the Hunger Games parody done on Saturday Night Live last April 7. The host during that night is none other than the voluptuous Sofia Vergara, a first time host of the show.
The satire revolves around the arena scene of the 74th annual Hunger Games. The Latina actress’s role in the sketch as Maria Gutierrez was inspired by Elizabeth Bank’s character named Effie Trinket, the escort of district 12 tributes. However, the similarities end there.
She plays the role of a TV reporter covering the Hunger Games live from the arena. By exposing the tributes in their hideouts during the interview, all of them died in the hands of other contestants except for Katniss Everdeen, played by SNL regular Abby Elliot. When Katniss was asked about her love life, she gave Maria some poisonous berries which ended up killing the loud-mouthed reporter.

My favorite skit from when Sofia hosted was the Pantene Commercial. Her accent is what makes her so funny. I watched it on DISH Online since I wasn’t able to see it when it aired. I was on a flight home from Florida. A few days before it showed while I was at DISH where I work, many of my co-workers were telling me that they thought that her accent was going to mess up the show. Since I watch her in Modern Family, I didn’t think she would be bad at all. She was absolutely hilarious!
